A large and impressive pair of early wrought iron fire dogs, Colonial Period, possibly pre-1775.  These fire dogs measure 21" tall overall with the log bars extending 13".  The arched feet have a spread of  7" with a 4+" high arch.  Each upright has  decorative cross hatching on the entire front as shown in close-ups below.  The flame shaped tops measure 3" high x 2 1/2" across.  The uprights taper from 1 1/8" width at the base of the flame down to 2" width at the peen.  They are heavy and thick tapering from 5/8" thick as the base to 3/8" at the top.  Both log bars are original, however, the back portion of one log bar has some burn damage from use but it is still solid and quite usable. Some burn out damage can also be seen on the arched feet.  An excellent early pair of typical Colonial fire dogs.

Early Victorian miniature fireplace andirons or fire dogs in cast iron from the mid 1800's.  This diminutive pair stands 4 1/2" high with a foot spread of 2 5/8".  The log bars are 2 3/4".  Explanations of miniature andirons are very varied and about the only thing agreed on is that they are hard to find.  Some of the opinions are that they were pipe rests, tool rests, fancies (display collectibles), shop samples, for doll houses, for dioramas, and the list goes on.  The top of these dogs looks like a head with indistinct impressions that may be a face.  Close-ups shown in bottom row below.  These are in aged black finish and have not been recently restored  and are in excellent condition.
