Early Victorian crank door bell with signed and patent dated bronze bell - N.F. Cone's Patent Sep. 8, 1863. Assembly mounts directly through an exterior door with the crank handle on the outside and the bell mounted inside - the operating stem coming off the crank mounts through the door into the bell to ring with a gong when cranked in either direction. Cast brass crank lever handle is 3 1/2" with a 2" rosette and the original porcelain knob measuring 1 1/8" diameter with light age crazing (secure on mount). Cast bronze mechanical bell is on a cast iron mount measures 4 3/4" in diameter. N. F. Cone was one of the well known bell manufacturers of the time. Their bells were sold to hardware companies such as Sargent & Co., Russell Erwin Mfg. Co. and Reading Hardware Co. who then made a variety of handles to accompany their bells. The customer choose the bell and handle separately in most cases. Complete, restored, and in working order, bell is adjustable for a door up to 1 3/4" maximum thickness and rings with a hearty gong on every quarter turn.
