Early Victorian mechanical gong door bell, with patent date of April 28, 1874, on the back of the bell shown below. Bell mounts directly through an exterior door with the "T" handle on the outside and the bell mounted directly opposite on the inside of the door connected and operated by the trip lever on the handle shown from the side below. Decorative cast bronze "T" style lever handle measures 6" high x 2 3/4" wide and extends from the door 1 1/2". Plain cast bronze mechanical bell measures 3 3/4" in diameter at cast iron base and is 4 1/4" center to center at the mounting holes. Bell rings with a hearty gong to be heard throughout the house. Complete and restored to working order, bell is adjustable to any door thickness up to 1 1/2". Because of wear marks on the lever, it appears that the bell handle was mounted and used upside down at some point in time (probably on the lock board of the door instead of the upper center stile) with the "T" handle pulling up instead of down and toward you as designed.
