Early Victorian mechanical gong door bell with a patent date of April 28, 1874 on the back of the bell.  Assembly mounts directly through an exterior door with the "thumb latch" style handle (above) on the outside and the bell (below) mounted inside - the operating stem from the handle (side view below left) mounts through the door into the bell to trip the bell and ring.  Decorative cast bronze thumb press style handle measures 4 1/2" x 3 1/8" and extends 1 3/8".  The mount holes are 5 1/4" on center.  Plain cast bronze mechanical bell measures 4 5/8" in diameter and extends 2 1/4" from door.  Bell rings with a single hearty gong that can be heard throughout the house each time the thumb style handle is depressed.  The bottom extension is in a permanent position for grip and bell is rung by the thumb pressing down on the top press and using the bottom press for leverage with the index finger below. Complete and restored to working order. Bell is adjustable to any door thickness up to 2 1/4".  At the time, bells and handles were sold separately - several bells were offered with a large variety of handles, and customer's chose each individually.  Comes with slotted screws.
