One of the early Victorian mechanical gong door bells with a patent date of April 28, 1874 on the back of the bell.  Assembly mounts directly through an exterior door with the lever handle (above) on the outside and the bell (below left) mounts inside - the operating stem extending from the handle (shown in side view below) mounts through the door into the bell to trip the bell and ring.  Decorative cast iron lever handle, with white porcelain pull, measures 4" high overall - the rosette is 2 1/4" diameter - the porcelain pull is 1 3/4" diameter - the arm extends from the rosette 2" when at rest as shown above.  The accompanying plain bronze mechanical bell measures 4 3/4" in diameter and 5 1/4" from center to center at the mount holes.  Bell rings with a single hearty gong that can be heard throughout the house.  Complete and restored to working order, bell is adjustable to any door thickness up to 2" without special modifications.  Bells and handles were sold separately - several bells were offered with a large variety of handles, and customer's chose each individually.  Comes with slotted screws.
