A very rare complete example of a wrought iron locking slide bolt from the early 18th century.  Mentioned in Albert Sonn's Early American Wrought Iron under Plate 205 (see last row below) which show various handle examples, bolts, and a drawing of using the bar key.  Mr. Sonn states that " for many years these handles and bolts with square punched holes were a mystery", however, when one was found intact on an early house, the owner was kind enough to explain that "the hole was the keyhole to a lock-bolt."  A simple wrought iron bar key is thrust through the square opening in the handle shown above and the hooked end is inserted in one of the notches in the bolt.  A dexterous movement of the hand then shoves the bolt in the desired direction, locking or unlocking the door.  The heart shaped handle is probably Pennsylvania in origin.  The back plate measures 3 1/4" high x 4 3/4" across.  The slide bolt has a large fan shaped handle with the square punched holes to position the bar - bolt measures 11 1/2" overall - the fan handle is 3 1/2" high.  Complete with two mount staples and drive-in jamb keeper.  The replica key is a replacement made in our shop.  An unusual and very rare locking slide bolt from an early Colony home.  In exceptional condition and works well.

A flush mount door bolt, manufactured circa 1860, in wrought iron with recessed finger slide operator.    Bolt is  mounted semi-mortise and when it is in place it is flush with the door surface - with nothing extending beyond the surface of the door.  The bolt measures 18" overall x 1 1/8".  The 9/16" round diameter bolt throws 5/8" and the bolt takes a 3/4" deep mortise to mount on the door.  Replacement keeper from our shop measures 2" x 1".   Restored and ready to install.  Complete with screws.

Unusual locking wrought iron slide bolt from the 18th century, probably used originally on an interior shutter.  At the time windows were secured primarily by bolting either exterior or interior shutters and some of the bolts were quite intricate.  Close-ups below show the flat press which released the lever holding the bolt in both the locked and unlocked position via the notched positions.  The body of the bolt measures 5 3/4" high x 3 1/4" wide with a replacement keeper made in our shop measuring 3 3/8" high x 1".  This bolt is not reversible and is left hand only.   Iron shows nice patina and aging.
