Rare transitional surface mount American door latch called Hamlet latches, patented in the late 1840's, this knobbed bar latch combines the brown mineral knobs of early rim locks with the bar latch mechanism of cast iron thumb latches all within a covered housing case (components are shown individually in photo below right photographed from the back with parts removed). The mineral door knob operates the bar which moves up and down and rests in the keeper (shown to the right of the latch above) which mounts on the jamb. Off-side is a matching mineral knob and plain iron rosette. The cast iron housing cover measures 4 1/4" x 2 1/4" high x 1/2" thick. The knobs are 2 1/4" diameter. Latch is reversible, restored, and complete - the knobs are adjustable on the spindle for various door thicknesses. A privacy latch mounted at the top of the housing cover can be flipped to prevent the bar from lifting for privacy. Restored and complete - ready to install.
