An excellent early American cast iron vertical rim lock with beveled or molded edges, circa 1860, by the Russell & Erwin Mfg. Co. (signed bolt) This lock features a raised American eagle on the back as shown below which, unfortunately, cannot be seen when the lock is mounted. Molded edge cast iron locks were not reversible and this is a right hand only. Lock measures 7 1/2" high x 5" deep x 1 1/4" without the keeper which is 1 3/8" additional and mounts on the jamb. Original narrow neck brass door knobs are 2 1/8" in diameter and are "Baxters Patent". One knob is peened permanently to the spindle while the other has a pivot lever which drops or pivots into the chosen slot on the spindle - an early example of adjustable door knobs. The brass rosette is 1 7/8" dia. and the brass covered key escutcheon is 2 1/2" x 7/8". Lock has brass bolts. The brass key is 5 1/4". Restored to a black finish and complete, ready to install. Comes with slotted mounting screws. Excellent quality American lock from the mid 19th Century.
