Large entry 6" American "1842" antique rim lock, one of  the earliest reversible rim locks manufactured in the U.S., patented in 1842 with a patent extension in 1856.  This lock shows the imprinted patent date seal with both dates on it.  Lock is reversible due to the patented latch that is beveled on all sides while the keeper has a large lip.  This latch and keeper allowed the lock to be reversed simply by turning it over and mounting it on whichever side of the door you wished.  Lock is restored and complete with cast iron trim and original brown swirl mineral knobs that did not use a side-knob screw.  The lock side knob is pinned directly onto the spindle while the off-side knob mounts into the rosette which keeps it in place.  Lock measures 6" x 4" x 3/4" without the keeper which is 1" additional.  The keeper has a patent date of Feb. 24, 1857 on it which places this particular lock set in the late 1850's.  There is no indication that these locks were manufactured after the start of the war.  Night latch at the top locks the knobs for privacy without using the keyed dead bolt.  Restored, complete with large brass 4 1/4" key.  Ready to install - comes with slotted screws.  Backset is 2 7/8".  Mounting instructions for the knobs can be provided upon request.
