Quantity:

A Moravian open work wrought iron surface mount latch, circa 1800-1840, with the removable screw-off exterior handle shown below left and center.  Levers are what is called a "spoon handle" style and the off-side handle has irregular ornate rosette shown with handle in mounted position below.  These latches were made primarily by blacksmiths in Moravian settlements, hence the name.  Lock body measures 7 1/8" x 3 3/8".  This type of lock is not reversible and is right hand only and will fit a door up to a maximum 1 1/2" thick and was used on both interior and exterior doors as the removable handle was actually used as a "key".  When you left home or just wanted privacy, the handle was removed so the latch could not be operated from the outside.  Lock is in good working condition but has not been restored and is in old finish as is.  Complete with drive-in rat-tail keeper shown from the side in above photo.  Exterior escutcheon measures 4 1/8" x 1 1/2".  The rat-tail keeper is 2" high overall with a 2 1/2" drive-in.  Back set of latch is 4 3/4".  Restored and complete.

Quantity:

A large and nicely worked Moravian open work wrought iron surface mount latch, circa 1800, with the removable screw-off exterior handle.  This lock has very unusual spoon style handles that are flat instead of the more common scooped or domed ends.   Exterior has an irregular ornate rosette shown with handle in mounted position bottom row below.  These latches were made primarily by blacksmiths in Moravian settlements, hence the name.  Lock body measures 9" deep x 4 1/8" at highest. Each handle was hand threaded to match each individual lock and handles were not interchangeable between locks.  This lock shows decorative notching the latch bar and linear decoration on the upright staple.  Lock is in good working condition.  Complete with drive-in rat-tail keeper 2 1/8" high overall x 3 1/2" deep.    Exterior escutcheon measures 4 1/8" x 1 1/2".  The rat tail keeper and the exterior rosette are both replacements handmade in our shop.  Back set of latch is 5".  Restored and complete.
