A very rare early American made cast iron vertical rim lock, manufactured circa 1835-45.  These earliest cast iron locks were not reversible and this is a right hand only.  Lock measures 6 3/4" high x 5" deep x 1" - keeper is 1 1/2" additional.  Period brass door knobs are 2" in diameter, with 2" rosette, and large brass key escutcheon (3 3/4" x 2") with swinging cover.  This lock has the rare function of a locking exterior knob while the interior knob always remain free.  The brass lever extending from the upper inside corner of the lock (shown in close-up below right) locks the exterior knob.  In order to open the door from outside when the knob is locked, the smaller emergency type key must be inserted in a small round access hole and used to retract the knob.  The inside knob is always free and allows the door to be opened anytime from inside.  This is a fairly common function today but was very rare in the early 1800's.  Lock comes with one of each key - the larger key being for the dead bolt.  Restored to a black finish and complete, ready to install.  Comes with slotted mounting screws.  Excellent quality American period lock from the early 19th Century.
