Rim lock set manufactured by Gilbert Lock Co., Patent
date
May 30, 1876 on the case along with G.L.C. Gilbert locks are hard to
find complete and original. Gilbert patented and solely manufactured this
unusual type of lock in both mortise style and rim locks. This rim lock is
reversible and complete. Set is in original finish and lock measures 3"
high x 3 3/4" - that is without the keeper which is 3/4" additional.
Each shank has a protruding thumb style squeeze lever which operates the latch
rather than the knobs turning as normal. These knobs are stationary - the
interior is permanently attached to the lock and the exterior is permanently
attached to the rosette and operating catch. There is no spindle in this
type of lock. The knobs are 2" in diameter and are brown mineral. An
arm type mechanism or operating catch on the exterior knob shank
mounts directly into the lock and operates the latch mechanism from outside when
the thumb squeeze is pressed. The same thumb squeeze is found on the shank
of the lockside knob and operates the latch when squeezed. The company was founded in 1876 and Gilbert locks
were manufactured for a short period of time. There is no bolt in lock -
it has a latch only which is locked in place with the key for privacy. The
night latch at the top of the lock also locks the mechanisms for privacy but the
latch can be retracted while in this mode by using the key.
