Most unusual and rarely seen keyed horizontal rim passage latches, circa 1850. These latches do not have a dead bolt - the key locks the latch instead, keeping the knobs from turning. The latch body is very unusually narrow and deep measuring 5" deep x 2" high without the 2" high x 1 1/4" keeper which would be additional on the jamb. The perfect lock for narrow lock boards. The latches have a slightly beveled edge around the raised center on a rectangular base. They are reversible and were made with keyed access from the outside as shown in the photo of the back of the latch below - showing the keyhole is positioned for vertical use when mounted for either hand. Off-side key escutcheon is included as well as a key and original brown swirl mineral knobs. Unusual and interesting early rim latch. Restored and complete with slotted mounting screws.
