American "1842" antique horizontal rim lock, one of the earliest cast iron reversible rim locks, patented in the 1840's and again in the 1850's. Lock is reversible due to the patented latch that is beveled on all sides while the keeper has a large lip. This latch and keeper allowed the lock to be reversed simply by turning it over and mounting it on whichever side of the door you wished. Lock is restored and complete with cast iron trim and original brown swirl mineral knobs that did not use a side-knob screw. The lock side knob is pinned directly onto the spindle while the off-side knob mounts into the rosette which keeps it in place. Lock measures 3 3/4" high x 4 3/4" deep x 3/4" without the keeper which is 7/8" additional and is keyed. Keeper is dated with a patent date of Feb. 1857. Night latch at the top locks the knobs for privacy without using the keyed dead bolt. Restored, complete, and ready to install - comes with slotted screws. Knobs will fit a door up to maximum 1 1/2". (Directions for installation assistance can be provided upon request). NOTE: The right hand mount side shown above and below left is in excellent condition - when mounted left hand, shown below right, the surface shows minor age pitting but also shows the imprinted patent seal stating Pat'd Dec. 17, 1842 - extd Dec. 13, 1856.
