Original early brass casting thumb latch with a full back plate and reeded handle, circa 1800. This type of latch was made in American and England at the same time and are hard to distinguish. This latch has an iron thumb with a brass cup molded over it and is a dished press with a long curled pivot lift as shown in side photo below left which will accommodate a door up to 2 1/2" thick.. This type of early latch usually had the "wear" parts in iron such as the thumb and bar set because iron was harder and lasted longer. Handle measures 9 1/2" high x 2 7/8" at widest point across with the full back plate and is nicely cast and chamfered. The handle is peened permanently on the back plate which is mounted by the mount holes top and bottom. The handle is 4 3/4" and is nicely formed, 1 1/4" wide, and extends 2" from the back plate. The accompanying bar set, pictured below, offers a 6 3/4" iron bar with the early brass period knob 3/4" in diameter. Also accompanied by a 1 1/2" drive-in staple, and a 2 1/4" high drive-in rat-tail keeper - all in wrought iron - all original, complete and restored. We provide slotted screws for mounting.
