An early square cornered Pennsylvania German or Dutch Elbow Latch with the removable screw-off exterior handle shown below, circa 1810.  Levers are deep spoon style and the off-side handle has round rosette.  Lock body measures 3 1/4" x 6 1/4" x 1 1/8".  This type of lock is not reversible and is left hand only and will fit a door up to 1 5/8"  thick maximum.   This type of lock was used on both interior and exterior doors as the removable handle was actually used as the "key".  When you left home or just wanted privacy, the handle was removed so the latch could not be operated from the outside.   Each handle was hand threaded to match each individual lock and handles were not normally interchangeable between locks.  Lock is restored and complete with drive-in keeper 4" overall.   This latch shows exceptional workmanship and is in excellent condition  - complete with slotted mounting screws.
