Victorian mechanical gong door bell in cast bronze.  Patent date on back of bell shows April 28, 1874.  Assembly mounts directly through an exterior door with the ornate bronze press lever handle on the outside and the bronze bell mounting opposite inside - the operating stem (shown in side view) extending from the handle mounts through the door into the bell to trip the bell and ring when thumb press handle is pressed down.  Stem extends 2 1/2".  The second grip below the movable press is stationary allowing an operating grip.  Exterior handle with well made early pattern, measures 4 1/2" x 3" at widest.  Mechanical bell measures 4  5/8" in diameter and is 5  1/8" center to center on mount holes.  Bell rings with a single gong made to be heard throughout the house.  Complete in original patina and in working order.  Bell is adjustable to any door thickness up to 2" maximum without special modification.  Bells and handles were sold separately - several  size bells were offered with a large variety of handles, and customer's chose each individually to their taste.  Comes with mounting screws.
