American 1842 patent horizontal rim lock, one of  the earliest cast iron reversible rim locks,  Lock is reversible due to the patented latch that is beveled on all sides while the keeper has a large lip.  This latch and keeper allowed the lock to be reversed simply by turning the lock over and mounting it on whichever side of the door you wished.  Lock is complete with original cast iron trim and original patented 1842 brown swirl mineral knobs that did not use a side-knob screw.  The lock side knob is pinned directly onto the spindle and held in place on the lock with a U clip placed on the indent on the spindle behind the lock.  The off-side knob mounts through the 2 1/2" special rosette which keeps it in place when mounted.  These knobs were patented specifically for this 1842 patent lock.  Lock body measures. 4 1/4" high x 5 7/8" deep x 1/2" without the keeper.  The original keeper is 7/8" wide additional.  Lever for the night latch at the top was previously broken off during an earlier time.  Back set - 4 7/8" to knob center.  Restored to a black finish, all original parts including cast iron key escutcheon, and 4" brass key.  Ready to install - comes with slotted screws.
