American "1842" antique vertical rim lock, one of  the earliest cast iron reversible rim locks, originally patented in 1842, with extended patents in 1856 - seal on the left hand side only of lock shows patent dates for Dec. 17 1842 and Dec 15 1856.  Lock is reversible due to the patented latch that is beveled on all sides while the keeper has a large lip.  This latch and keeper allowed the lock to be reversed simply by turning it over and mounting it on whichever side of the door you wished.  Lock is complete with original cast iron trim and original patented 1842 brown swirl mineral knobs that did not use a side-knob screw.  The lock side knob is pinned directly onto the spindle and help in place by a U clip on the spindle behind the lock.  The off-side knob mounts through the 2 1/2" special patented rosette which keeps it in place when mounted on the door.  Lock measures. 4 1/4" high x 3 1/4" deep without the original 3/4" keeper.  Night latch at the top locks the knobs for privacy without using the keyed dead bolt.  Restored to a black finish, all original parts.  Back set 2 1/2" - spacing 3 1/2".  Complete with old replacement key, Ready to install - comes with slotted screws.
